THE “YOUNG AT HEART” MINISTRY”

 

I am so pleased to now be working with the “Young at Heart” ministry, along with the Adult Education ministry that I have been doing for some time. On the second Thursday of each month we meet for lunch at the Piccadilly Cafeteria in the University Mall at 1:00 p.m. Not only do we enjoy a good lunch, wonderful fellowship, usually some door prizes, and a few “senior” jokes, etc., but we also plan and discuss future activities of the group, as well as remind one another who needs our prayers, cards, visits, etc.

 

One of our families that has become active in the “Young at Heart” group is the Ray Buchanan family.  Ray and Irma have certainly been a welcome addition to Gateway in recent years. Ray and Irma will be celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary on Friday June 13th. Congratulations!

 

Yesterday the “Young at Heart” group went to the Chumuckla Farmer’s Opry. This is always a pleasant evening of good food, good fellowship, and enjoyable music. Plans at this time are to take the new bus on its first “Young at Heart” outing.

 

Thanks again to Raphael and Mary Salinas for hosting our second annual (I hope) fish fry at their home on Saturday May 3rd.  The attendance was very good (in the 50s) in spite of some threatening weather a little earlier in the day.

 

Let me encourage you, if you are not now active in the “Young at Heart” group, to plan on attending as many of the activities as you can. These activities are not only for Gateway members, but they are a good way to invite others to join in and become familiar with many folks at Gateway that are in their age range. Thankfully, we have visitors at most events. Seniors out there are no different from younger folks……they are looking for a place to belong and enjoy community. We are blessed at Gateway to have meaningful activities for all age groups.

 

I am thankful that Jim Miller is assisting Mark and Judy Stark in providing activities for our older singles. On June 20th Jim will be going with a group to Atlanta to visit the lovely aquarium there.

 

Danny and I participated in a funeral service for Troy Gordon this past Monday. Troy had not been able to get out to services for some time, but he used to tell us how much he enjoyed Gateway…..and he loved God’s Word and could quote from it very well. Troy was one of those few remaining folks around that served in World War II and were a part of that “greatest generation.” 

 

It is not too late to plan to go to the Orlando Spiritual Growth Workshop in July. A group of us will be taking a van and going on Thursday July 24th and returning to Pensacola on Saturday evening July 26th.  Please see me soon if you’d like to join us….and you don’t have to be a senior!

 

I have recently been thinking about some events that I hope will interest the group. One of these

is a trip to visit Savannah and Charleston early next year.  More later.
